Trust Simon

The National Trust have had an online shop for quite some time, selling things like Trust books, maps, rucksacks and rugs. Late last year they decided to up the ante and, to quote the autumn NT
magazine: "... we now want to work with craftsmen and artisans who
have close connections with the Trust.  Maybe they are operating close to or at one of our properties, or perhaps their work is inspired by our special places."

A new section of the shop, called "Handmade in Britain" was launched.  Our own Simon Brock jumped at the opportunity.

"The NT were keen to know more about my work because of the provenance of the materials I use and the way my leather goods are made, both of which are sympathetic to the NT's own aims regarding conservation etc.

There's also an obvious connection between my work and the Arts & Crafts Movement, which is evident in the labour intensive methods I use and in the aesthetic of my designs.

The NT were really interested when I explained what a huge
influence my experience of places like Wightwick Manor has had on my approach to art/craft/design."

Wightwick (pictured) is an NT property full of William Morris wallpapers, beautiful interiors and fascinating collections of
Pre-Raphaelite stuff.

Simon's interest in the Arts & Crafts movement is no convenient fad.  He is involved in the restoration of the Roddam Spencer Stanhope painting in Hoylandswaine Parish Church (which also has a William Morris stained glass window), and has been know to give lectures on the Arts and Crafts movement.

The NT were obviously suitably impressed, and the end result is that Simon now has his range of goods available through the NT web site.  Of course, you can still buy them through madebysimonbrock.co.uk.
