Artist's StatementFrom my garden workshop in South Yorkshire, I design and
make kiln fired glass bowls and sculptures.
I create one-off pieces, cutting layers of translucent glass and combining them with glass rods, frits and shards. In addition, I often interlace silver thread, gold leaf, copper sheet or organic materials with the glass. These pieces are then fired in a kiln to around 800 degrees – the transformations that occur with each new firing give wonderfully exciting and sometimes unpredictable results. I am inspired by the landscape near my home – from the grand views of hills, moorland and the ever changing sky to the intricate patterns found in a dry stone wall or an icy stream. I start with a colour or interesting shape and allow the work to grow from there – sometimes I have a definite aim in mind, sometimes the glass seems to have a mind of its own! One of my favourite things about glass is the way the colours alter in response to the changing light throughout the day. It illuminates any setting and its smooth flowing surfaces invites you to touch. In this age of mass production, it is a pleasure to create beautiful objects for people to own and enjoy – no one piece ever quite like another! |
